Article Processing Charge
Article processing charges (APCs) support the costs of editorial handling, peer review administration, production, online hosting, indexing, and long-term archiving.
Current charges
At present, there are no APCs. Publication in Impact Surgery is free for all authors.
APCs from mid-2026
From mid-2026, APCs will apply as follows.
For authors funded by UKRI, NIHR, NIH, Wellcome, Gates, industry funders, or other higher-education funders with dedicated open access support, an APC of £1,000 will be charged on acceptance.
For all other authors, the APCs will be:
£500 for full research articles, including systematic reviews, narrative reviews, original research papers, brief research papers, and protocols
£250 for all other article types (unless invited)
Waivers and discounts
Impact Surgery is committed to equitable global participation in surgical research. Fee reductions are available where all authors (including first, middle, last, and corresponding authors) are based in low- or lower-middle-income countries, as defined by the World Bank at the time of submission. Authors who do not have access to institutional or funder open access support, or who are experiencing financial hardship, may contact the editorial team to discuss additional support. Decisions on waivers and discounts are made independently of the peer review process and have no influence on editorial assessment or acceptance decisions.
Timing and payment
Where applicable, APCs are charged only after a manuscript has been formally accepted for publication. No fees are charged at submission or during peer review.
Post-acceptance withdrawal
Withdrawal of an article after formal acceptance results in editorial and production costs for the journal. Where an author requests withdrawal at this stage, the corresponding author will be invoiced for 50% of the applicable APC to cover work already undertaken.
